best soccer games 2022

What are the best football games on PC in 2022? It can often feel like there are two or three football games you can play on PC. FM is the king of football manager games. It is indeed the best when it comes to sports simulation games. Sports Interactive’s long-running series will always be our best soccer PC game, but there are loads of soccer games on PC, all with their own style, gameplay mechanics, and surrealism that deserve your time and attention. Whether it’s an under-the-radar studio game, an indie game, or something from different sports, there’s a football game for every fan…

To shed some light on these underrated classics, we’ve compiled our favorites in this handy list. So put on your favorite retro soccer jersey and check out these FM alternatives for yourself.

Football Manager

We know we spent most of this list offering alternatives to it, but for those who love football games, we think it’s important to include Football Manager at the top of this list. One of the rare series that seems to get stronger (and the price goes up) with each new iteration, the Football Manager series is the most advanced football management and simulation that lets you win the Champions League with Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. You discover star talent, organize individual training programs, negotiate salaries and try to find the right words to boost your team after trailing 2-0 in the first half. Find yourself barking and celebrating orders from the touchline like a real coach (sometimes I don’t know if you’ve broken a mouse like me because of a lot to lose with a last minute goal).

Fifa

Fifa

The FIFA series has had its ups and downs, as with any annual game series, but there’s no denying that few games come close that will make you feel like you’re controlling a football match. The stats, attributes and traits that define each player can be felt on the pitch when the dangerous first touch of your star defender almost makes the opponent score a goal or you start dribbling in a tight midfield. Career mode can’t quite match that of Football Manager despite recent developments, but it’s still unique on the field.

FIFA 22 hasn’t changed much under the hood. If you hit an unexpected hit, career mode is better thanks to a new interactive match simulation that lets you jump in and save the day. The gameplay is a bit more streamlined with better transitions and direction, but for the most part this is a very familiar annual release.

eFootball – PES

eFootball

You can’t talk about FIFA without mentioning Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series. eFootball 2022 does not include any upgrades from the previous year, instead the developers focused on building PES 2022. Fortunately, that hasn’t stopped fans from around the world from creating their own mods to completely transform the game. One of the major drawbacks of PES is the lack of licenses it has compared to FIFA, but PES allows players to add their own custom teams using mods.

For solo players, Master League is one of the best single player modes in any soccer game. In Master League mode, players control a football club for several seasons. Not only will you have to deal with transfers, creating unique training programs for the development of your players is essential, especially for clubs without big budgets.

Rocket League

Rocket League

This isn’t your typical football game, but Rocket League is technically a football-based game thanks to arcade-style football mixed with rocket-fueled cars and vehicles. There’s a lot to love about the popular game from Psyonix. Its fluid, physics-driven mechanics are a delight and lead to different, wonderful, and sometimes hilariously bad goals and moments. 3v3 games are always intense, and results can vary in one direction depending on whether you had a good session, who you teamed up with, and often purely by luck where the ball lands.

Customization options allow you to create a vehicle entirely your own, and there are several game modes to experiment with until you find your perfect fit. Online casual and competitive matches, an offline Season Mode, extra modes and options like basketball and hockey are just a few of the game types available to you. I put all this together with the Rocket League Season Pass; here you can earn rewards, rise in the world ranking and get XP boosts.

Football Drama

Football Drama

Football meets real-time strategy and card battle games gameplay in this delightfully humorous game. As Rocco Galliano, a manager with existential problems, you are tasked with changing the fate of the ailing Calchester United club.

Doing so will not be easy though. Like the old Telltale games, casting is a big part of Football Drama. You will meet regularly with journalists, the club owner, criminal organizations and even your house cat, and the decisions you make during these conversations have a positive or negative impact on all aspects of your management journey. If you spit on the guy who hired you, you could be fired the same day you take over the team. If you play a game with the mafia and it leaks to the press, you can gather an angry crowd at your doorstep.

Football Drama’s turn-based match mechanics, combined with the use of “slogan cards” that you earn based on your interactions, can turn the results in your favor or vice versa and add an intriguing layer to the FM-inspired match engine. Your team’s stamina and card usage are crucial to winning matches, so putting them together strategically will be the difference between victory and defeat. Games and reviews can feel repetitive after a while, and despite Football Drama’s huge rambling narrative, there are only seven endings you can unlock. With its unique mix of gameplay, hilarious humor and literary inspired plot, this game is something you should check out.

Football, Tactics & Glory

Football Tactics Glory

Although similar to FM, Football, Tactics & Glory is more than that. Combining XCOM chess-like strategy with RPG elements, Creoteam’s original spin on the management simulation genre takes a fun yet realistic approach to player development and tactical gameplay.

Fully customizable player faces let you give your stars some personality compared to FM-like refresh faces, while mod support lets you add real-life leagues and tournaments to keep the game fresh. Add Twitch integration, where viewers can interact with streamers and your fans can play as big a role in your management journey as you do.

Whether you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to FM’s in-depth mechanics or a realistic football alternative to the Blood Bowl, Football, Tactics, & Glory is a solid PC football game.

Pixel Cup Soccer

Pixel Cup Soccer

Pixel Cup Soccer has been around for a while, but it’s another game that reminds you of the simplicity of soccer games from the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Its pixel aesthetic evokes the nostalgia of FIFA games before offering 3D graphics. Local multiplayer is supported and there are a variety of different competitions you can dig in at your leisure. There’s even support for women’s soccer here, with the Women’s World Cup and Pixel Cup supported by very few soccer games, including FM. If Super Arcade Football isn’t bringing the nostalgia excitement you expected, Pixel Cup Soccer can help take you beyond the limits.

Behold the Kickmen

Behold the Kickmen

Imagine a football game developed by someone who has no idea what football is. If you thought anything along the lines of Behold the Kickmen, you’re right. A crazy football simulation, Behold the Kickmen reinvents football without reinventing it too much.

While there’s a silly story mode to keep you busy, if things get a little too serious for your liking, you can activate a mode in the options that turns the game into a dystopian bloodsport. It’s a shame it doesn’t have multiplayer because it would be funny to thrash your friends to forget, especially in bloodsport mode. Behold the Kickmen is a cheap, fun indie game.

Kopanito All Stars Soccer

Kopanito All Stars Soccer

Have you ever wanted to see a match with no referees and players full of superpowers?
Merixgames’ soccer game has been around for a while, but its cartoonish appeal and skill-based gameplay mean there’s plenty to keep you interested. Regional tournaments and leagues, multiplayer support for up to five players, and four difficulty levels give you good value for money, and there’s even the option to turn your ingenious or surprising goals and celebrations into animated GIFs to send to your friends if you have them.

Still, it’s the superpower abilities that really make the game shine. You can teleport away from your opponents, score super smash goals that knock players out of the way, including the goalkeeper, and even use a magnet that pulls the ball near you. Weird but rewarding, especially if you master the game’s control system and after weeks of honing your craft, you’ll be satisfied when you finally beat the game’s hardest difficulty setting.

Super Arcade Football

Super Arcade Football

Remember when soccer games used to be top-down 2D? Super Arcade Football repeats this aesthetic. Going back to the days of Sensible Soccer and Italia ’90, OutoftheBit’s retro-inspired gameplay will make you want to dust off your old consoles for a trip down memory lane.

It’s faster and more graphically superior than its predecessors, but all the gameplay mechanics are here. Different types of pitches are available to play, from dry to muddy to icy, simple controls like passing, shooting and moving are all you need, and there’s support for up to four players if you want a friend or three to join in.

Chuck has bigger goals and jumping walls and some hilarious match modifiers including an online mode and is a treat for those who grew up in the Super Arcade Football, SNES and Mega Drive era.

totoball

totoball

Table football, or Fussball as it’s commonly known, is fun, so if you love it, you’ll love this surprisingly effective PC port Totoball.

Developed by Artur Rezende, Totoball is a carbon copy of the physical game we all play and love in common rooms and bars around the world. Like its real-life counterpart, Totoball’s mechanics are very simple; so much that there are only two keys you need to use to play.

Sure, you can step into the real world and play pinball properly. But for those days when you don’t want to leave the house, Totoball is an easy game to pass the time.
