Opera GX: What Is “Game Browser”?

Opera released “Opera GX” and promoted it as the world’s first gaming browser. Beyond the game-inspired theme and Razer Chroma integration, there’s a very interesting CPU and RAM limiting feature. But will it speed up your PC game?

What is Opera GX?

Opera GX is a desktop web browser for Windows PCs. Despite the name, it is a browser designed for use in games, as Steam’s built-in browser runs on the Steam overlay.

Like the standard version of Opera, Opera GX is based on the open-source project Chromium, which underpins the Google Chrome web browser and the upcoming Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser. Websites should look the same as Chrome and you can install Chrome extensions on this browser as well.

What is Game Browser?

Don’t expect Opera GX to significantly improve your gaming performance. This browser includes features designed mostly for “gamers”: Razer Chroma integration, built-in game news and deals, Twitch panel, and a game-inspired theme with sound effects by the game soundtrack designer.

The only feature that can improve your performance is “GX Control”: It has built-in RAM and CPU limiters that can limit the memory and CPU time your web browser will use.

Game Theme

The first thing you’ll notice is the theme: Opera GX takes the “gaming browser” to heart, with a dark theme and go to bright colors unique to gaming peripherals and PCs. By quickly clicking on the “Easy Setup” icon in the upper right corner of the browser, you can choose from several pre-selected colors for the highlights of the browser, or any color you want. Customizable wallpapers are also available.

This browser also includes Razer Chroma integration. Activate the “Razer Chroma” option here and any color you choose in the browser will be replicated on Chroma-enabled accessories like Razer’s DeathAdder Elite gaming mouse or BlackWidow keyboard. It is a stylish way to change your browser theme and RGB color at the same time.

GX Control: RAM and CPU Limiters

Beyond the theme and Razer Chroma integration, the most interesting feature is what the browser calls “GX Control”.

Click the GX Control button in the sidebar and you will get a panel with “RAM Limiter” and “CPU Limiter”. For example, you can force the browser to use only 3GB of your system’s 12GB RAM or limit.

This is quite a unique feature. Leaving it always enabled will make your browser slower. However, if you don’t want to manually close tabs to free up resources for games, limiters might be helpful.

Of course, it’s unclear whether you’ll get a performance boost from this. Windows needs to manage resources automatically, and your browser needs to get out of your way while playing a game. But this doesn’t always work properly, so gamers tend to close their browsers and don’t leave 100 tabs open in the background while gaming.

“Before Opera GX, players often closed their browsers to avoid slowing down the gaming experience. We developed the GX Control feature to make sure people’s games run more smoothly without having to compromise what they do on the web,” explains Maciej Kocemba of Opera.

It is also worth noting that this browser will not speed up web games in any way. Performance features are just about getting out of the way and limiting the resources web pages can use.

What Else Does the Game Browser Include?

This browser is made for gamers. The “GX Corner” panel is always located in the left corner of your tab bar. It offers a deals aggregator with news about upcoming games and links to games on sale. It also has a “Daily News” section that by default gives you a dedicated stream of gaming news.

The sidebar has a built-in panel where you can browse the channels you follow, see who is currently streaming online, and even get notifications when a channel you follow starts live streaming.

Opera GX also plays “GX Sound” sound effects, including when hovering over icons on the Speed Dial (New Tab) page. Opera is proud of this, boasting that they were “created in collaboration with sound designer Rubén Rincón and the group Berlinist, which was recently nominated at the BAFTA Game Awards for the original soundtrack to the game Gris.” you can disable it.

You Will Have Normal Opera Browser Features

Opera GX also offers some of the other features found in Opera. For example, it is also available in the messaging sidebar; Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Vkontakte and WhatsApp are integrated and you can chat directly from your browser interface.

Like Opera, Opera GX also has a built-in ad blocker, free VPN, and a “video out” feature that lets you play video in a smaller layer outside of your web browser. Opera promises a “Video over game” feature will come so you can watch a video or other video at the top of a game while playing, but that’s not yet available.

Should you use it?

If you love the look or want features like Razer Chroma and Twitch integration, go ahead and use Opera GX. Despite its unusual appearance, it is a fairly standard Chromium browser that should work with websites like Chrome.

But the main attraction here: Aesthetics and built-in gaming culture features like Twitch integration, gaming news. The first version of Opera GX even identifies its version number as “LVL 1”.

Limiters are one of the most interesting features we’ve seen in the browser in a while and might be worth playing around with. However, don’t expect huge performance gains. Beware: If you always leave them enabled, you’ll use a slower browser.
